Cuzco and train to Machu Picchu
It was 4:35am when my friends and I woke up in the hotel in Cuzco… then, after a shower and a hot coca tea we walked all the way to the train station. Dry air and a cold breeze accompanied us all through the walk.
From the train station we departed at 5:45am a 4 hours adventure in the cheapest wagon. I might say it was funny traveling with Indians and their animals, as it made the long hours more entertaining.
On each stop you could see people (and animals) coming in and out.
There were amazing views all the way through Aguas Calientes, were we descended from the train. It was almost 10am.
The first thing you think when you get to the Machu Picchu train stop is: “where Machu Picchu is???” I traveled thousands of kilometers and there’s nothing here!!!
Well, to get to Machu Picchu or even to be able to see it, you may climb a long way through the high mountains, or you can take an improvised tour bus – not bad after the train, and get up there in about 25 minutes.
Getting to Machu Picchu is amazing! There’s such a feeling when you get makes you forget the exhausting travel to get there.
What to do there?
Just appreciate the views, understand how the Incas could build an awesome city as that, with tremendous and perfectly placed rocks that even now there’s no idea how it was accomplished.
You can have a guide to explain you the origin and the whole story about it, and learn where were the houses, the animals’ fields, and also schools and recreation places.
Some of us climbed to the Wayna Pichu, (the big mountain). To enter there you have to sign a visitor’s book and agree that you enter under your own responsibility as some people didn’t come back! When you get to the top of the mountain you can see the rock of sacrifice… that was a sacred place, and you can notice that!
Time flies so fast that you have to be sure to go to the right places on time, and yes, before the journey ended us all wanted to go to the right place where the typical picture is taken, that’s not difficult to find out as you’ll see all visitors going there, and you can ask… where it is (that’s close to the Puerta del Sol – The Sun Entrance).
Leaving Machu Picchu, same time takes to get to the train station and back to the train on time (don’t miss it!!!) and to the hotel in Cuzco... and rest a while!
