Prayers and Poverty

Posted on Nov. 10, 2006 at 02:00 PM in Endless Poverty (Subscribe)
We went back to the Temple today to pray, observe and absorb before we head back to Delhi. The one thing that is really getting to Belle is the amount of poverty that one sees in India. Even for myself, I have never seen so much but I told her we can't give money to all of them but you wish you could, especially for the children. It would be impossible for the government to implement and maintain a viable social program to deal with a population the size of India. I told her that every country has the same problems, just not to this type of magnitude but that was of little comfort to her as a little girl was tugging at her shirt looking for a handout at the Gaya train station. The fact that we made it to the train station was reason to praise Buddha. It couldn't possibly get any worse than our first autorickshaw, I thought......NOPE....WRONG......IT COULD.....How about a crazed minibus in the absolute pitch darkness of the countryside swerving to avoid people, animals, bicyclists and other untold motor vehicles. Every corner we took, every jerk of the wheel the driver made, and every oncoming vehicle I thought we were going to hit, I squeezed Belle's hand a little bit tighter. Screw Wonderland or Six Flags....you want the ride of your life....come to India and take public transportation. By the way, I just heard the TERRIBLE NEWS...Please tell me its not true....Brittney and Kfed are done....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
