Fraser Island (1)

From Byron Bay we go the 'tilt train' North to Hervey Bay - a fairly uninspiring seaside town used pretty much only as a gateway to the amazing Fraser Island.

Fraser is the world's largest sand island - a 75 mile long strip of land comprising lakes, forests and beach. In the absence of roads the only way to get around on the island is by 4WD. We hired a small Suzuki 4WD (think the postman pat van) and had great fun driving through the forest on deep sand tracks, getting stuck & buried in sand about 5-6 times over the two days.  I didn't appreciate how to properly handle the car on the deeper sand until some useful advice from an Aussie ranger: "drive it like you stole it mate". It was easy after that.

Over the two days, we stopped at Lake Mackenzie (brilliant blue water on bright white sand), swam in Eli Creek (a freshwater creek surrounded by forest & wildlife), and camped on 75 mile beach (waking up to find a couple of dingoes sniffing aound the tent)

Hooked up with 2 dutch girls and spent most of the time with them - digging each other's cars out of the sand whenever we got stuck. Glad we met them since they showed us how to put up our tent!

Sailing on the Whitsundays next...
