A Home in the Minds of Men
Yesterday was the first full day here in europe. It was quite a hectic one, what with walking tours and orientation and a visit to the World War II American Cemetery in Margraten. It is the only American military cemetery in the NL and is about 9 km from Maastricht. The guide we had knew his history, he is an ex-pat working at the visitor's center now. Apparently there is a different sort of memorial/sculpture at each American military cemetery located in Europe. The one in Margraten was very symbolic, with the three doves on the widow's shoulder and the cut down tree with a new branch poking out. (Check out the pics)
The cemetery was the first place I allowed myself to look like a tourist and take pictures. I'm slowly getting over my "looking like a tourist" phobia. It happens anyway. European men and women just look different. Not only fashion wise (they're still wearing skinny jeans...should have brought mine) but just in general face and body structure.
